Creamy, foamy drinks might taste delicious, but they can have enough calories to serve as an entire meal — and that’s not even taking into account the amount of sugar and preservatives they contain. Make your own healthier versions instead. From pumpkin spice lattes to spiced hot apple cider, there’s a nutritious alternative for most high-calorie beverages
Biologists tell us that life on earth billions of years ago consisted of anaerobic (lacking oxygen) microorganisms. Some mutation caused a group of these microorganisms to develop chlorophyll which allowed these tiny organisms to gather energy from the sun in photosynthesis. The by-product, or waste product, of photosynthesis is oxygen, which is a potent free […]

“Burpees are such a great way to activate multiple muscles, get the heart rate up and burn mega calories. In one single burpee, you work your legs, arms and abs and you also elevate the heart rate to increase cardiopulmonary strength. If you’re looking to lose weight, incorporating them into your workout routine is a must.”—Kit Rich, celebrity trainer and co-owner of SHIFT by Dana Perri
There are so many diets, theories, recipes, and books floating around that it’s easy to get overwhelmed by it all. And NO ONE has the time or energy to sort through the countless number of websites trying to piece together the perfect diet for you.
These items can be purchased inexpensively at your local department store or supermarket (and they’re one of the most necessary weight loss tools). With food scales, however, you’d be well advised to spend more money on a battery-operated, digital scale instead of the less expensive, spring-loaded type.
If you eat more calories than your body uses, your body stores them as fat. One pound of fat is about 3,500 calories. To lose 1 pound of fat in a week, you have to eat 3,500 fewer calories. That divides out to 500 fewer calories a day. One thing you can do is remove regular soda from your diet. This alone cuts over 350 calories per day. You also can burn off 3,500 more calories a week. You can do this by exercising or being more active. Most people do a combination of the two. If you do this for 7 days, you can lose 1 pound of fat in a week.
If you want to lose weight fast, make time for exercise every day. Try a circuit training program designed to give you visible results within only a few days of beginning the regimen, or join a fun exercise class, like swimming, biking, or dance aerobics. Use an online calculator or ask your doctor to help you determine how many calories you should be eating each day, then keep track of the calories you consume in a journal. Try to eat lean proteins, whole grains, and plenty of fruits and vegetables at every meal.
Heavy metals such as lead, mercury, aluminium, arsenic, cadmium, are natural metallic elements (with high atomic weight) but over the years, multiple and intense use of these metals in agriculture, medical, cosmetics and other industries have caused high concentrations of these in immediate human surroundings. This accumulated environmental pollution is now part of our everyday […]
I have a Q about calorie counting. I eat a whole foods diet and have for years. I was counting calories on and off, and found it ridiculously hard to keep track of when you make 98% of your food from scratch — you have to measure and list each ingredient and know exactly how much you consume, and if you are cooking for more people than just yourself, the accuracy is off. A lot of these apps, also, the info in them is populated by the users and will have inaccuracies. I’ve seem ridiculous shifts in the data from just one item, and that it relies on human nature (people can put in fantasy numbers because they want it to work), so you’re relying on poor data. I would go many months using the app, inputting each and every ingredient, and trying to be as accurate as possible, but who the heck has time to sustain this on top of prepping a weekly farm share from scratch? Anyone know of a more user-friendly app for people who already eat really healthy?
The complex family of vitamin E: 4 tocopherols and 4 tocotrienols Vitamin E is the master antioxidant that helps in protecting body from the damaging effects of free radicals that lead to serious degenerative health conditions such as premature aging, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, lung disease, cataracts, cancers and even Alzheimer disease. You may notice that if you’re an avid gym goer, you lost some strength and endurance. A temporary decrease in physical performance is typical. Once your body becomes keto-adapted, your body will be able to fully utilize fat as its primary source of energy.
Throughout human history, injuries led to inflammation. Inflammation is a natural part of the healing process and should subside once healing is complete. In the 1950s corticosteroids were developed which reduced the inflammation associated with injuries and surgery…but the healing also stopped because these steroids shut down the immune system. Inflammation is an essential part […]
To diet successfully and make changes that stick, you’ll need to begin planning and preparing before starting the actual diet. The following changes will help lay the groundwork for your diet and the start of your new lifestyle.
Keto is a diuretic. You tend to go to the bathroom more to urinate, which attributes to a loss of both electrolytes and water in your body. You can usually help combat this by either drinking bouillon cube or Powerade Zero and by increasing your water intake. Mainly, you want to replenish your depleted electrolytes.
But if you’ve ever tried losing weight, getting in shape or simply leading a healthier lifestyle, you know that it’s not as easy as just changing your diet and squeezing in more workouts. That’s why I’ve rounded up my favorite 49 ways to help you get healthy and fit.
Fad diets also are not proven to be safe or help you lose weight. They often offer short-term changes, but don’t help you keep the weight off. People who promote fad diets are famous or get paid to make claims. This does not make them correct or trustworthy.
However, it’s a huge step in the right direction towards healthy eating, and you’ll generally have more success with losing the right kind of weight when combined with strength training – burning fat and keeping the muscle you have.
“This is the germiest thing in your house,” says germ guru Charles Gerba, PhD, a microbiologist at the University of Arizona in Tucson. “About 15 percent of sponges contain bacteria that can make you ill.” So toss them in the dishwasher once a week or microwave them damp on high for 30 seconds.
Anyone who wants to start a diet on the right foot should know that setting a firm goal gives you an advantage over saying “next week.” It may not be easy to start a diet and give up favorite foods, snacks and beverages, but once you get started, it becomes a habit to make healthier food choices. Choosing a definite day or date fits into this because you have committed yourself to changing your life. Consult your doctor before beginning any new diet.
I’ll give you the same answer that I give people when they ask me “what’s the best workout plan?” The one that you’ll actually stick with! Us members of the Nerd Fitness Rebellion are in this for the long haul, so we pick diets that work for our particular body type and situation because we know that they’re diets that we can stick with.
Eating clean doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite foods. Instead, think of ways to “healthify” them yourself! Is dip your weakness? Try this spicy bean dip. Are Fridays your pizza night? Make a coconut crust pizza instead. I guarantee they’ll be delicious, satisfy your cravings and help you feel great!
11. Figure the amount of muscle gain by subtracting the weight loss from the fat loss. In the example above, where fat loss equaled 20.04 pounds and weight loss was 18 pounds, 2.04 pounds of muscle were gained.
Yet getting healthier is still a worthy goal, and many experts in the fields of exercise, health and nutrition have clear ideas about how to get there. Here are some low-stress, bare-minimum ways to become a healthier person, even for those of us who love to eat and hit snooze.
Most people who are trying to lose weight have one or more obstacles. You could have bad habits that started at a young age. Habits are hard to break, but they are possible. Your doctor can help you make changes, one step at a time.
3. Direct the person with the camera to move away from you until your entire body is visible in the viewfinder. It’s best for that person to be 15 to 20 feet from you and zoom in with the camera lens. The camera should be turned sideways for a vertical format. It’s also best for the photographer to be seated with the camera approximately 3 feet off the floor.
From the sound of it, you might think leaky gut only affects the digestive system, but in reality it can affect more. Because Leaky Gut is so common, and such an enigma, I’m offering a free webinar on all things leaky gut. Click here to learn more about the webinar.
It can help eliminate bad feelings that arise once you start making different choices. For instance, if you’re constantly turning down dinner invitations with friends, they might assume you’re just not interested in spending time with them.
Carbohydrates: When you eat carbohydrates, they get converted to glucose (sugar) in your system, which is then used to provide energy for all sorts of body functions to take place. Vegetables and/or fresh fruit are quality sources of carbohydrates, with grains being less so in my opinion…but we’ll get to more grains later. There are certainly bad carbohydrates (processed carbs, refined grains, and more), and those are the ones we want to avoid. Unless you’re a marathon runner, you can function with WAY less carbs than you’re probably consuming now.
“Macros” is an abbreviated term of macronutrients. Your macros are your daily intake of “the big 3” nutrients: fats, protein, and carbohydrates. You can use the following calculator to see what your daily needs will be. If you want to learn more about macros and how they work in relation to keto and our bodies, click here to read more >
Are you at a party with hors d’oeuvres and appetizers you just can’t turn down? Decide you’ll eat just one type of bite-sized food and turn down the rest. Or, is your office having a pizza party and the smell of cheesy goodness is too hard to resist? Pick the slice loaded with veggies, enjoy and then turn away.
Support is an essential part of a successful weight loss program. Enlist a family member, find a friend to join you in your walks or workouts, and get involved in the WLC online community. These people will become a source of inspiration, support, and encouragement on a regular basis — and especially when the going gets tough.
gpointstudio/ShutterstockWhen life gets super busy and you’re preoccupied by something—you had a baby, you’re really busy at work, you’re taking on caregiver responsibilities for a family member—today is not the day to vow to lose weight. Stressful, busy circumstances are not the time to test your resolve and stick-to-it-ness, and there are also practical limitations, like lack of time or sleep. For dieting to be successful, “all the stars need to be aligned,” says Stephens. Now more than ever good health habits are important (eating energizing food, for instance), but tackle that weight loss goal once life calms down.
As a mother, daughter, wife, friend and colleague, helping my friends and family starting a raw food diet is becoming more and more frequent because everyone seems to want to lose weight, detox or just become healthier these days! And starting a raw food diet can become extremely stressful because this time you want “success”, right?
Can you stick to the plan for a long period of time? What happens when the diet is over? If it’s not something that you can fit into your lifestyle permanently, you’re likely to revert back to your old eating habits. Can you make the plan fit around your commitments? If you eat out or travel a lot for work, try to plan in advance how you could work around these. If a plan is too rigid and prescriptive you’ll have a hard time following it in the long-term.
“But Steve, I already paid for it, I need to eat it.” At this point, it’s a sunk cost. Eating it because you already paid for it just compounds the unhealthy problem…if you’re truly serious about turning your life around, the few bucks you spent on this junk food is a small price to pay. Throw it away, give it to neighbors, donate it to a food shelter, whatever you need to do. Get rid of it, and maybe only go out ONCE this week, or bring your lunch in twice to make up for the extra money spent.
