Beginning a diet to lose weight and improve health is a worthy goal, but it can be a bit overwhelming. There are bound to be challenges whenever you start something new, especially when it involves something you do several times each day — like eating and drinking.
“If a client has come to me looking to lose 10 pounds, I would tell them to simply move. Move more, and more often. Walk or bike ride to class or work, even park further away from your location in the parking lot. Take the stairs or take a walk during lunch. You don’t have to spend hours every day in the gym sweating, but you do have to make a conscious effort to move more, and sit less. This works great because it doesn’t feel like work and you’re burning more and more calories throughout the day.” — Ajia Cherry, personal trainer and Founder at Functional Innovative Training
It comes on suddenly: One minute you’re feeling great and the next you’re starving for a snack. Skip the vending machine and prepare your own healthy snacks to take to work, school or whenever you’re out and about. Why? In part, because most processed snacks are purely carbs and are the definition of empty calories, jacking your blood sugar and leaving you hungrier afterwards.
“Keep foods like fruits visible on the counter and put all else away. The foods that are visible will be eaten and those that are not will be forgotten about (or less likely to be eaten). Out of sight, out of mind.” — Christopher Mohr, PhD, RD
Make a list of what you’ll need for these meals, and don’t stray from your list when you get to the grocery store. Looking at market circulars can also give you ideas and even cut costs by buying weekly sale items and seasonal produce. Stronger flavors can help you control portion size. For example, dark chocolate or a dark beer are satisfying in small amounts, but difficult to consume rapidly.
Have an accountability system. Tell your friends that you are going to get in shape, start a blog and publicly declare your intentions. Send one of your friends $200 on PayPal. Every time you work out and check in with them, they will send you $10 back. Every time you skip a workout, he gets $10. Do you really want to fund your friend’s drinking money for the weekend? Do you want to see the smug “I told you so” look on his face a month from now when you’ve given up? Hell no!
This is one of those diet that people either love or love to hate: it seems far too restrictive for some, while for others it’s the only way that they can find success. I’ve already covered this diet EXTENSIVELY with the Beginner’s Guide to the Paleo Diet.
You can control bad food cravings and overeating by consuming protein-rich foods, such as greek yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese, milk, chicken, steak, turkey breast, fish, beans, peanut butter, tofu, and the list goes on and on!
Keep your exercise regimen interesting. Variety is the key to both promoting a healthier you and keeping you motivated. When you do the same exercise day in and day out, you put yourself at a higher risk of injuring yourself. You are also more likely to become bored, thus making it harder to find the motivation to keep exercising. While at the gym, switch between machines, join a fitness class, and add some resistance training into your schedule.
Build a support network. Supportive friends and family members can help you lose weight and maintain your weight loss. Being accountable to even one person increases your chances of successful, speedy, and long-term weight loss.
Some background info – I started lifting 1.5 years ago, changed my diet a few times. Kept changing goals – trying to increase calories to gain muscle, trying to reduce calories to lose fat. Didn’t stick to one thing because I didn’t see changes.
You might be asking, “What’s a net carb?” It’s simple really! The net carbs are your total dietary carbohydrates, minus the total fiber. I recommend keeping total carbs below 35g and net carbs below 25g (ideally, below 20g).
Note: Are you a vegetarian or vegan and want to go on a ketogenic diet? It’s still possible! Just keep in mind that the dietary restrictions can sometimes be a little bit intense. Make sure to plan ahead and prepare to aid your success. To help out, we’ve published articles (with 7 day meal plans included) for both the vegetarian ketogenic diet and the vegan ketogenic diet.
A ketogenic diet may be more expensive than a standard American diet, but it’s no different than other clean eating lifestyles. That said, there’s still numerous ways to save money while cooking keto. The best ways to save money is the same as with any other budgeting:
If you’re preparing to go on a diet, your goal is probably a no-brainer: weight loss. However, take time to contemplate the effect of losing some of your excess weight. Will it change the way you think of yourself or the way you act? Imagine the end result and then break your overarching goals into specific short-term goals. These smaller weekly goals will act as stepping stones to keep you on track and motivated when all you want to do is dive head first into a bowl of ice cream.
When you make plans to start a diet, you are likely to have a specific goal in mind –– losing weight so you can fit into a bridesmaid’s dress for an upcoming wedding, swimsuit season or simply losing enough weight to improve your health and reduce your risk of serious illness. With this goal in mind, think of your circle of friends and choose the one person who will not allow you to slide or fail.
Eat every 2.5 to three hours. Eating revs up our metabolism to allow for quicker fat loss, keeps our minds sharp, and provides consistent energy throughout the day. Learn to eat till you are satisfied and not overfull so that you are hungry again for your next small meal.
Stop eating outside, specifically oil-fried food. If you don’t know how to cook (or don’t like to), you have to learn. Google is full of healthy and tasty recipes. If you are consistent, your cooking skills can reach a level of art.
“Your body begins to work differently. This study proves that small amounts of nourishment throughout the day are better than the same amount of food concentrated in three big sittings. If we feed the body at regular intervals we send a signal to the body that it doesn’t have to store calories. Conversely, when we skip meals we send just the opposite signal for the body to store calories, creating a negative effect on the metabolism.” — Dr. Wayne Scott Andersen, co-founder and Medical Director at Take Shape For Life
You probably use ginger in some of your recipes, but do you know that ginger is more than food or spice? Ginger is an aromatic and spicy rhizome that is a darling of Asian cuisine used in many types of dishes including stir fries. The underground stem has a brownish skin and yellow or whitish […]
Kateryna Petrushynets/ShutterstockProcessed, packaged foods are often loaded with more salt, sugar, and refined carbs than you’d put in the foods you cook for yourself. When you’re looking to drop weight fast, avoid foods that come in packages and stick to whole, unprocessed foods. (Here are the four most harmful ingredients in processed food.) Build your plates with non-starchy veggies, unprocessed whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, and season with spices, not salt.
“Sweet potatoes are a great post-workout snack. They’re low on the glycemic index and rich in fiber which helps tame that out-of-control appetite many people have after they exercise.” — Shaun T, celebrity fitness trainer and creator of Insanity, Max:30 and Hip Hop Abs
Your glycogen stores can still be refilled while on a ketogenic diet. A keto diet is an excellent way to build muscle, but protein intake is crucial here. It’s suggested that if you are looking to gain mass, you should be taking in about 1.0 – 1.2g protein per lean pound of body mass. Putting muscle on may be slower on a ketogenic diet, but that’s because your total body fat is not increasing as much.
