Most people end up driving themselves crazy measuring and testing. It’s much better to focus on the nutritional aspect, making sure that you’re in taking proper foods and staying within your macro ranges (read below).
This is one of those diet that people either love or love to hate: it seems far too restrictive for some, while for others it’s the only way that they can find success. I’ve already covered this diet EXTENSIVELY with the Beginner’s Guide to the Paleo Diet.

You can tell me that happiness is a state of mind and for the most part you are correct but because I can control how my body looks through the things I eat then I know that an unhealthy body means I’m slacking.
“I try to fit in small bouts of exercise whenever possible, like doing jumping jacks or crunches during television commercials or dancing while washing dishes. This burns extra calories and keeps me from mindlessly munching in front of the TV. Now my clothes fit way better, and I’m more toned than ever.” —Megan Tiscareno, Hammond, IN
And yet…we still fight the good fight. We go on a diet, we starve ourselves, we eat crappy low-fat diet food that tastes terrible, and we become so hungry and cranky and miserable, and yet we STILL don’t see the number on the scale get smaller.
They provide lots of flavor with no fat and few calories, plus they turn up your digestive fires, causing your body to temporarily burn more calories. Choose them over butter and creamy or sugary sauces. Learn more ways to eat less fat without missing the taste.
A keto diet has shown to improve triglyceride levels and cholesterol levels most associated with arterial buildup. More specifically low-carb, high-fat diets show a dramatic increase in HDL and decrease in LDL particle concentration compared to low-fat diets. Read more on keto and cholesterol >
My goal with Nerd Fitness is to remove every single barrier and excuse you might have to level up your life. I try to write motivating articles that inspire action and give you the desire to change, but I know their influence can fade as soon as the laptop closes and the Xbox/Netflix/Hulu beckons.
Mix quinoa, peppers, carrots, white beans and broccoli together to make a healthy twist on the traditional salad. Add in some olive oil, pepper, salt or lemon juice for taste. You can even include grapes, nectarines or almonds for additional flavoring.
However, it’s a huge step in the right direction towards healthy eating, and you’ll generally have more success with losing the right kind of weight when combined with strength training – burning fat and keeping the muscle you have.
For example, my friend Saint spent two years restricting his calorie intake and running more without getting the results he wanted. It wasn’t until he went 100% Paleo and started lifting weights that his body fat percentage dropped down into the single digits.
You probably use ginger in some of your recipes, but do you know that ginger is more than food or spice? Ginger is an aromatic and spicy rhizome that is a darling of Asian cuisine used in many types of dishes including stir fries. The underground stem has a brownish skin and yellow or whitish […]
Once you’ve learned how many calories you’re consuming, you might start to see a few pounds disappear, but it’s just a step in the right direction. Hopefully this won’t come as a shock to you, but 2000 calories worth of gingerbread cookies doesn’t fuel your body the same way 2,000 calories of meat, vegetables, and fruit would.

There’s a small percent of people that experience raised LDL cholesterol as well. These elevated levels are usually fine – though harder to test. The dangers of LDL cholesterol come from the size and density, which are shown to be very healthy on keto. Read more on keto and cholesterol >
Flying? Turn on the air vent above your seat. “I fly a couple of times a week,” says Travis Stork, MD, an emergency medicine physician and co-host of The Doctors. “Part of the way I stay healthy is by being very conscientious about all of the germs that are on planes. I turn on the air vent and angle it so it blows air down in front of my face—that’s filtered air and it creates a little bit of a barrier to keep the germs going around the cabin from getting into my nose or mouth.”
Nutritional therapist Kerry Torrens says, “A general guide is to aim for fat loss of 1lb per week. To achieve this, you need to create a deficit of 500 calories a day from your normal eating plan. The best way to start is to keep a food diary so you understand exactly how much and what you’re eating and drinking.”
Using the same method above of cooking your egg, wrap it up into a whole wheat tortilla shell when done. Add in some peppers or tomatoes and top it off with a small dash of hot sauce. You can wrap it up in foil if you are headed out the door for an on-the-go breakfast.
Seems strange, doesn’t it? But our minds often confuse boredom, tiredness and more with hunger. Hard to believe? A 2015 study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology showed that experiencing boredom actually not only increased the amount of snacking, but also the amount of unhealthy eating overall. (9)
If you’re out and ordering a sub, get the six-inch sandwich. Buy a small popcorn, a small salad, a small hamburger. Again, studies find we tend to eat what’s in front of us, even though we’d feel just as full on less. Try these portion-control tricks when you’re dishing your own food.
It depends on your diet. If you are eating more calories than needed a day, then you probably will not lose weight. If you are eating the right amount of calories for your weight and amount of exercise you will lose weight. Walking will give you better results though. You actually burn more calories doing an energized walk than a run.
Put a card in your wallet that lists any allergies you have and medications you’re taking, in case you end up in the ER and are unable to speak for yourself. Says John M. Kennedy, MD, co-author of The 15-Minute Heart Cure, “It could just save your life.”
All of a sudden your body has to deal with the lack of glucose and increase in fats, which means building up a new supply of enzymes. As your body becomes induced into a ketogenic state, your body will naturally use what’s left of your glucose.
“Even though a smart diet is key, exercise can help boost your body’s metabolism to shed fat. Through health care providers often recommend brisk walking or jogging, these exercises may not help you see the results you want. Instead, try interval training. Here’s how: While performing your usual walking or jogging routine, intersperse faster paces periodically throughout your workout. In other words, you may be walking at your normal pace for 2 minutes and then begin a slow jog or fast walk for 1 minute. After the faster speed, return to your slower speed and continue this alternation for 20 minutes. Research shows this type of exercise can stimulate metabolism, melt fat and push your fitness status to the next level.” — Dr. Sean M.
