“Before breaking a sweat, take a moment of gratitude for your health. Doing so completely changes the energy of your workouts and can inspire you to push yourself harder.” — Kit Rich, celebrity trainer and co-owner of SHIFT by Dana Perri
A University of Vermont study found that online weight-loss buddies help you keep the weight off. The researchers followed volunteers for 18 months. Those assigned to an Internet-based weight maintenance program sustained their weight loss better than those who met face-to-face in a support group. You and your weight loss buddy can share tips like these ways to lose weight without exercise.
The more drastic the change, the higher the possibility for drastic results, but the higher likelihood that you’ll fail as soon as you hit a bump in the road…so balance these changes with your personality.  You might stumble a few times before you find your stride or you find a method that works for you.
Nutritional therapist Kerry Torrens says, “A general guide is to aim for fat loss of 1lb per week. To achieve this, you need to create a deficit of 500 calories a day from your normal eating plan. The best way to start is to keep a food diary so you understand exactly how much and what you’re eating and drinking.”

The humble carrot never got much attention, but it’s now a nutritionist favorite, thanks to its high vitamin A content—just one half cup has almost double the amount you need for healthy eyes. They’re hot with chefs, too, making it easier to get your good-vision fix.
Setting a fitness goal gives you a specific purpose for your workouts and the satisfaction once you’ve completed it. Whether it’s deciding to run your first 10k, learning how to do a headstand when practicing yoga or completing 50 push-ups without stopping, a challenge might be just what you need to get out of a fitness rut.
Get a yearly flu vaccine? Great. Now add a TDaP booster. TDaP stands for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis—and that last disease, also known as whooping cough, is a particularly dangerous respiratory illness. In fact, cases of pertussis in the U.S. have risen about 137% since 2000.
Living a healthier lifestyle is a process. You’ll slip — we all do! The best thing to remember is that no one decision will derail your efforts. If you ate more than you intended at your last meal, don’t skip the next few, but instead choose filling, protein-rich foods. Couldn’t work out as much as you wanted? Squeeze in a 10-minute workout and remind yourself to do more the next time you can.
Track what you eat. It’s so easy to over-consume on carbs when they’re hidden in just about everything you pick up. Keeping track of what you eat helps control your carb intake and keep yourself accountable.
“Spread your protein requirements evenly throughout the day, over three meals and two snacks. Think of your total protein requirements as protein blocks, each block consisting of 7 grams of protein. Too much protein at one time will increase insulin levels, which leads to fat storage.” — Barry Sears, PhD, author of  The Mediterranean Zone
It’s been scientifically proven that listening to upbeat music during exercise helps you work harder and enjoy both the workout and the music more. (2) Plus, it can help pass the time during a particularly intense part of your workout.
You can read more about all these processes in a famous book by Gary Taubes “Good Calories, Bad Calories”. You can find it on Amazon. It’s quite difficult to read but if you manage to do, you won’t have any questions about carb and fat metabolism!
…or one less treat a day, or one less glass of orange juice. Doing any of these can save you about 100 calories a day, and that alone is enough to prevent you from gaining the two pounds most people mindlessly pack on each year. Check out these other weight loss tricks that don’t require diet or exercise.
oizostudio/ShutterstockResearch demonstrates that eating later can actually lead to slower weight loss, while eating a larger meal at breakfast and smaller meals throughout the day can help you lose more weight! And while we’re not going to tell you to restrict yourself to no food after 6 p.m, it’s important to consider what time of day you struggle most with temptation.
BoxerX/ShutterstockExperts dub this “the fresh start effect.” In a study from the University of Pennsylvania, researchers found that people were more likely to act on their health goals after landmark dates, including holidays and birthdays. When you’re thinking about how to start a diet, this is an ideal time. They explain that after a milestone, you’re less likely to dwell on past mistakes, making it easier to perform behaviors more in line with “the new you.” It also helps you think in big-picture ways, which can drive you toward your goals. You’ve got this!
Instead of piling everything on one plate, bring food to the table in individual courses. For the first two courses, bring out soup or veggies such as a green salad or the most filling fruits and vegetables. By the time you get to the more calorie-dense foods, like meat and dessert, you’ll be eating less or may already be full. Nothing wrong with leftovers!
Stop drinking sugary liquids. Sip on water, tea, black coffee or seltzer instead of soft drinks, juice energy drinks, flavored coffees, and martinis. Cutting calories with substitutions can be a lot easier than you might think. For example, a tall latte in the morning may pack 500 calories. Since a pound of body fat (lost or gained) is roughly equivalent to 3,500 calories, replacing that rich beverage with black coffee can help you lose a pound per week.[9]
There are numerous benefits that come with being on keto: from weight loss and increased energy levels to therapeutic medical applications. Most anyone can safely benefit from eating a low-carb, high-fat diet. Below, you’ll find a short list of the benefits you can receive from a ketogenic diet. For a more comprehensive list, you can also read our in-depth article here >
Lunch can be another challenging meal for anyone. If you are at school or work all day long, this makes it difficult to make sure you eat a healthy lunch. Don’t worry, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich isn’t the only choice you have.
“When clients skimp on their reps or don’t complete their full workout routine, they’re only hurting their own end results. It doesn’t matter how long it takes or if you need to rest in between exercises, what matters is completing the full workout” — Lori-Ann Marchese, fitness celebrity and owner of Body Construct LLC
Conversely, the more food in front of you, the more you’ll eat—regardless of how hungry you are. So instead of using regular dinner plates that range these days from 10 to 14 inches (making them look empty if they’re not heaped with food), serve your main course on salad plates (about 7 to 9 inches wide). Instead of 16-ounce glasses and oversized coffee mugs, return to the old days of 8-ounce glasses and 6-ounce coffee cups. Try these other tricks for eating in moderation.
Once you’ve learned how many calories you’re consuming, you might start to see a few pounds disappear, but it’s just a step in the right direction.  Hopefully this won’t come as a shock to you, but 2000 calories worth of gingerbread cookies doesn’t fuel your body the same way 2,000 calories of meat, vegetables, and fruit would.
Whether it’s a healthy appetizer, a tasty side dish, or your favorite clean-eating dessert, you’ll know there’s at least one healthy option that you can fill up on while minimizing your intake of the unhealthier ones. You might even convert a few people in the process, too!
By choosing a specific date, you know the time for beginning your diet is imminent and getting closer every day. By the time that date comes around, you know “today’s the day.” Having a specific date chosen and circled on your calendar also allows you to throw out foods that would jeopardize your ability to stick to your diet and to buy new, healthier foods and beverages.
If you’re still confused about what a net carb is, don’t worry – I’ll explain further. Let’s say for example you want to eat some broccoli (1 cup) – seriously my favorite and most delicious vegetable out there.
To diet successfully and make changes that stick, you’ll need to begin planning and preparing before starting the actual diet. The following changes will help lay the groundwork for your diet and the start of your new lifestyle.
Ask about a mineral body wrap. Some mineral wraps claim to help you slim down by literally making you “lose” inches off of your waist, thighs, and arms. The process involves a mineral-based cleanse that is supposed to detoxify your body, helping you shed weight, reduce cellulite (fat near the surface of your skin), and tone and firm your skin almost instantly.
Does your schedule get especially busy a few times a year? Prepare yourself by making a few extra servings of your favorite healthy meals and freezing them so you can simply reheat when you have no time to cook.
Far too often people assume that because they’re eating healthy, whole foods, they’ll lose weight. Calories are calories and if you’re stuffing your face with whole-wheat penne, you won’t see the results you want. It’s all about portion control. One serving of dry cereal should be no bigger than your fist and a piece of meat as large as your palm. This portion size chart from the Dairy Council of California makes it easy.
You’re more likely to eat more—and eat more high-fat, high-calorie foods—when you eat out than when you eat at home. Restaurants today serve such large portions that many have switched to larger plates and tables to accommodate them. You’ll gasp when you see just how bad the unhealthiest restaurant meals in America are. If cooking sounds like too much work, steal these tips from working parents who cook every night.
Anyone who wants to start a diet on the right foot should know that setting a firm goal gives you an advantage over saying “next week.” It may not be easy to start a diet and give up favorite foods, snacks and beverages, but once you get started, it becomes a habit to make healthier food choices. Choosing a definite day or date fits into this because you have committed yourself to changing your life. Consult your doctor before beginning any new diet.
Drinking herbal teas such as green tea, white tea, black tea and rooibos tea can amp up your metabolism. According to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, green tea is more effective than other teas like oolong at promoting weight loss because of it’s high levels of catechins. (6) So if you want to lose weight fast, I recommend drinking 1–3 cups of green tea daily.
“A study by David Jenkins, MD, PhD—the University of Toronto pioneer in low-glycemic eating — demonstrates that eating small portions at frequent intervals is good for your health in a number of remarkable ways. Within the study, they found that people who ate every three hours reduced their blood cholesterol by over 15% and their blood insulin by almost 28%. That’s key, because in addition to regulating your blood sugar level, insulin plays a pivotal role in fat metabolism, inflammation and the progression to metabolic syndrome. When your body produces less insulin, you’re much less likely to convert dietary calories into body fat.
Can you stick to the plan for a long period of time? What happens when the diet is over? If it’s not something that you can fit into your lifestyle permanently, you’re likely to revert back to your old eating habits. Can you make the plan fit around your commitments? If you eat out or travel a lot for work, try to plan in advance how you could work around these. If a plan is too rigid and prescriptive you’ll have a hard time following it in the long-term.
You can tell me that happiness is a state of mind and for the most part you are correct but because I can control how my body looks through the things I eat then I know that an unhealthy body means I’m slacking.
The ketogenic diet has been used since the early 1900’s to treat epilepsy successfully. It is still one of the most widely used therapies for children who have uncontrolled epilepsy today. Learn more about how keto can help with epilepsy in our article >
