Instead, suggest fun alternatives. Instead of happy hour, why not take a new exercise class together? Instead of indulging at brunch, go on a hike or check out a spin class. If that’s not your friends’ cup of tea, you can even host a meal at your place.
I am NOT a fan of “diets”, detoxes, juice cleanses, or crash-fads that result in vast fluctuations in your body weight and health.  These are the useless solutions that are sold to you in pill form, in MIRACLE DIET INFORMATION ads online, and in super expensive health food stores.
Not all fat is created equal. The fats found in foods like avocados, nuts and dark chocolate are actually good for you — and they taste delicious! Enjoy them on a regular basis to reap their health benefits but don’t go overboard because they are calorie dense.
So you’ve decided to commit to a healthier lifestyle. Although this decision can seem daunting, practicing healthy habits doesn’t have to be hard. Not sure where to start? Use these tips to achieve your fitness goals and improve your energy levels quickly and easily.
“Research continues to support the role of a high-protein diet and weight loss, however, we don’t want to reach those protein needs exclusively with animal proteins. Plant proteins found in beans not only help us feel full and stabilize blood sugar but beans are associated with longevity. Who cares about being skinny if you die young?” —Jennifer McDaniel, MS, RDN, CSSD, LD, food and nutrition expert
We are spending more money on fitness quick-fixes, gym memberships, “health food”, personal trainers, and other ‘life improvement’ products than ever before. Thanks to the power of the Internet, we’re hit on a daily basis with “Top 10 healthy foods,” “foods to avoid for optimum health,” “6-pack abs in 15 minutes a day!,” and millions upon million fitness sites extolling expert advice.  Super markets like Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and even healthy “fast food” places are popping up everywhere that make it incredibly simple to eat healthy foods.
Studies find that people who eat cereal for breakfast every day are significantly less likely to be obese and have diabetes than those who don’t. They also consume more fiber and calcium—and less fat—than those who eat other breakfast foods. Make oatmeal, or pour out a high-fiber, low-sugar cereal like Total or Grape Nuts, and boost it up with these healthy cereal hacks.
The complex family of vitamin E: 4 tocopherols and 4 tocotrienols Vitamin E is the master antioxidant that helps in protecting body from the damaging effects of free radicals that lead to serious degenerative health conditions such as premature aging, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, lung disease, cataracts, cancers and even Alzheimer disease. However, this vitamin is […]
Did you know that daily exercise can reduce all of the biomarkers of aging? This includes improving eyesight, normalizing blood pressure, improving lean muscle, lowering cholesterol, and improving bone density. If you want to live well and live longer, you must exercise! Studies show that even ten minutes of exercise makes a difference — so do something! Crank the stereo and dance in your living room. Sign up for swing dancing or ballroom dancing lessons. Walk to the park with your kids or a neighbor you’d like to catch up with. Jump rope or play hopscotch. Spin a hula hoop. Play water volleyball. Bike to work. Jump on a trampoline. Go for a hike.
On top of that, you know what crap food is: food that comes from a drive-thru window, a vending machine, box, bag, or wrapper.  If it has an ingredient list longer than A Game of Thrones, it’s probably not good for you.  If it started out as real food and then went through fourteen steps to get to the point where you’re about to eat it, it’s probably not good for you.
You gain an advantage for your diet plan when you pick a specific date to start your diet. By choosing a particular date like your birthday or the first of next month, you have set and defined your goal — and setting realistic, personalized goals is crucial to dieting success, MayoClinic.com reports.
Your puppy should eat three small meals a day until he is about six months of age – then he can eat twice a day and eventually once a day if you wish. This is especially important for small breed puppies as they can become hypoglycemic if meals are spread out too long.
“But Steve, people will think I’m weird!” EMBRACE THE WEIRD. Fitting in with everybody else got you where you are now. Maybe doing things that others think is weird is precisely what you need to get back on the right path.

If you’re preparing to go on a diet, your goal is probably a no-brainer: weight loss. However, take time to contemplate the effect of losing some of your excess weight. Will it change the way you think of yourself or the way you act? Imagine the end result and then break your overarching goals into specific short-term goals. These smaller weekly goals will act as stepping stones to keep you on track and motivated when all you want to do is dive head first into a bowl of ice cream.
yes, indeed, high fat low carb diet is the most effective way of losing weight. It’s carbohydrates not dietary fats that prevent your body by stimulating high insulin secretion from using fatty acids in the adipose tissue as a source of fuel. That means that by eating too many refined carbs you won’t be able to lose any weight at all. Therefore, cutting those carbs (sugar, white flour, potatos, white rice, etc) will do the miracle: you will curb your appetite and make your body use its internal sources of fuel (fat) instead of external (glucose). You can eat all kinds of fat rich foods along with proteins. But stay away from only trans fats (for example, margarine).
The reason we’re suggesting 45 minutes instead of the typical 30 as one of the ways to lose weight is that a Duke University study found that while 30 minutes of daily walking is enough to prevent weight gain in most relatively sedentary people, exercise beyond 30 minutes results in weight and fat loss. Burning an additional 300 calories a day with three miles of brisk walking (45 minutes should do it) could help you lose 30 pounds in a year without even changing how much you’re eating. If you need motivation, try these secrets of women who work out every day.
But as I have had a few failed attempts before in approaching the whole build muscle-lose belly fat-get fit game, it will be much (MUCH) appreciated if someone could offer (Steve, please help out) some worthy advice.
Even if we have the best of intentions, the goals we set to get healthy (after this last slice of pizza, of course) sometimes fall by the wayside. It can be hard to stay motivated, or even properly informed, since the recommendations for what to eat and how long to exercise can be confusing and conflicting. (Fat, for example, was off the menu for years under official guidance that eating fat makes you fat, and now that advice is getting kicked to the curb.) As a result, truly healthy behaviors can have a hard time cutting through the noise. Despite everything we know about the health benefits of exercise, a recent study found that 43% of employed adults do not exercise often.
Start your day on the right foot and fuel your body with a hearty breakfast. It’ll give you energy in those first few hours you’re awake. Plus, since breakfast is the first meal of the day, you’ll have all day to burn those calories. Tired of the same old eggs and toast? Try some of these delicious breakfast recipes.
You need to be drinking between 0.5 ounces to 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight. That’s probably way more water than you’re used to drinking so you need to come up with a strategy to ensure you get the water that you need.
Believe me, this really works! Because the same serving of food looks like less food on larger plates, trick your brain into eating less by serving your main dish on salad-sized plates instead of dinner ones. (8)
It has nothing to do with secret pills or crazy workouts. In this 3 day challenge, you’ll learn why your body loves to store fat, how you can turn it into a fat burning machine, and how to maintain the lifestyle through awesome meals.
You know that you should eat REAL food and stop eating junk food. You even know that a majority of “healthy” foods out there are crap. You know that your diet is 80% of your success or failure. You know HOW to build a workout, or you at least know that there are free workout resources available through the site. There are even products available through the Nerd Fitness Store that do everything short of holding your hand when getting started with exercise!
You can read more about all these processes in a famous book by Gary Taubes “Good Calories, Bad Calories”. You can find it on Amazon. It’s quite difficult to read but if you manage to do, you won’t have any questions about carb and fat metabolism!
Weekends –– Saturdays and Sundays –– are best for starting your diet. Because you are at home, away from school or work, you have two days built into the start of your diet to begin eating a new and healthy diet, television health personality Dr. Mehmet Oz explains. By the time you actually begin your diet, you should have emptied your cabinets, pantry, refrigerator and freezer of most, if not all, of the sweet, fat-laden and unhealthy foods you had. You should now have mainly healthy, low-fat, low-sugar or sugar-free foods to choose from. If you have overlooked something, you have plenty of time on a weekend to visit your supermarket and buy it.
See your health care provider before beginning any form of cardiovascular exercise. Obese people have a higher incidence of joint trauma when exercising; jarring motions should be altered during training.
Dean Drobot/ShutterstockHIIT stands for high intensity interval training, and it’s a great way to build muscle without spending hours in the gym. The idea is to go all out for a short period of time, followed by a slower pace that allows you to recover. Think of jogging or sprinting all out for 30 seconds, followed by a minute or two of rest, then repeat. Short bursts of high-intensity exercises keep your heart rate up while adding lean muscle. More muscle mass equals calories burned on a daily basis. Also, the more lean muscle you have, the higher your metabolism is.
The first thing I want to make sure you know is that the fat in your food is not what made you fat.  It wasn’t until the past 40-50 years that poor fat was suddenly vilified (after a few scientific leaps of faith with no real evidence to back it up), which is why every “healthy” food these days is “low fat” or “fat free!”  Not surprisingly, our country is fatter and more unhealthy than ever, and yet people still avoid fat at all costs and consume more “healthy whole grains!” (ugh).
I knew grains were bad for your weight! and no-one I told believed me, this article has given me the motivation to set my diet straight. I was just wondering what your ethos is on alcohol? i.e. how much would be acceptable to drink? or is it that bad I should cut it out altogether?
Continue to check in with your doctor while on your weight loss plan. Remember to think about the big picture. Setbacks are bound to happen, but you should concentrate on the small goals and changes. These are what will get you to the finish line.
NOTE: The main exception to ketoacidosis is type 1 diabetics – it can happen when insulin levels are severely low which is rare in someone with a normally functioning pancreas. Dangerously high ketone levels result in insulin secretion.
“A study by David Jenkins, MD, PhD—the University of Toronto pioneer in low-glycemic eating — demonstrates that eating small portions at frequent intervals is good for your health in a number of remarkable ways. Within the study, they found that people who ate every three hours reduced their blood cholesterol by over 15% and their blood insulin by almost 28%. That’s key, because in addition to regulating your blood sugar level, insulin plays a pivotal role in fat metabolism, inflammation and the progression to metabolic syndrome. When your body produces less insulin, you’re much less likely to convert dietary calories into body fat.
Other contributors are a sedentary lifestyle, an absence of activity, lack of sleep, anxiety, depression and sometimes a hormonal imbalance. Surprisingly, this bunch of important factors covers only 20% of the problem.
TIP: It’s also a good idea to keep sandwich bags, a lunch bag that’s insulated, storage containers and a thermos or water bottle on hand as well. This makes it easy to transport your lunch back and forth to avoid having to buy out somewhere.
People often argue that performance is affected when on a keto diet, but that’s not true. Well, not in the long run. In the short-term, you may notice some small physical performance drops, but this will subside as you continue replenishing fluids, electrolytes, and adapt to the fat intake.
Part of the reason the Paleo Diet is so successful for so many people is that it removes ALL of the guesswork!  “No, I can’t eat that because it’s not paleo” makes everything incredibly simple!   People on the paleo diet know they can eat meat, fish, fowl, veggies, fruits, and nuts. That’s it. If it doesn’t fit into one of those categories, then they can’t eat it.
Add exercise in. It’s a known fact that exercise is healthy. If you want to get the most out of your ketogenic diet, consider adding in 20-30 minutes of exercise a day. Even just a small walk can help regulate weight loss and blood sugar levels.
Eating healthy shouldn’t be a nutrient numbers game. And no: you don’t have to go vegan or adopt a Paleo diet. Just make sure your plate contains more than two different colors, says Simin Nikbin Meydani, director of the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University. “If it’s not, it’s boring, and you won’t meet your nutrient requirements,” she says. “If it’s green and red and brown, you can.”
